Abstract
Filamentous fungi, a critical class of industrial microorganisms pivotal to the biomanufacturing industry, has extensive applications in various fields such as pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, and chemical materials, which are playing a vital role in human life. Recently, innovations in synthetic biology have further driven the application of industrial filamentous fungi in biomanufacturing, highlighting their critical role in this field. This article presents a comprehensive review of the recent progress in the field, covering the latest developments in genetic modification techniques for industrial filamentous fungi, successful cases of rational strain improvement strategies aimed to enhance the quality and efficiency of current product manufacturing processes, and innovative technologies that utilize industrial strains as chassis cells for the production of plant natural products, bio-based chemicals, and functional proteins. The review summarizes and analyzes the work that has been discussed, and explores the prospects and challenges for industrial filamentous fungi in biomanufacturing.
